Health America earned an "Excellent" Accreditation for its HMO plan and Health Assurance earned an "Excellentý Accreditation for the Health Assurance POS by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to measuring the quality of America's health care.

With corporate offices in Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Health America and Health Assurance provide managed health care products and services to approximately 12,000 employers in Pennsylvania and Ohio. HealthAmerica and its affiliates employ over 2,200 people in Pennsylvania

Coventry Health Care is the parent company of HealthAmerica and Health Assurance, along with other plans nationwide. It is one of the largest health insurance organizations in the country. The History


Health America and Health Assurance have been the regionýs leading innovators in health care for over a quarter of a century.

1975 - Health America opened its first office in West Penn Hospital of Pittsburgh, PA. A second office opened in November in nearby Monroeville.

1981 - Health America merged with the Health plans Corporation of Nashville, TN, and became the largest independent investor-owned and operated HMO nationwide.

1984 - New offices opened in Central PA, covering the 7 counties of Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York. Health America served 50,000 members.

1988 - The Coventry Corporation of Texas purchased Health America and provided it with the necessary financial support its previous owners could not offer.

1990 - Health America began marketing a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) product through a related entity know as Health Asssurance.

1995 - By this year, HealthAmericaýs coverage area included Western and Central PA, Centre County Penn State, and portions of Ohio and West Virginia.

1996 - The company introduced Advantra, its Medicare HMO for seniors, and was ranked #1 HMO by U.S. News & World Report.

1997 - By yearýs end, HealthAmerica served 545,000 members.

2000 - HealthAmerica celebrated its 25th business anniversary.

2002 - Health America served over 600,000 members, with a network of 11,600 doctors and 113 hospitals.

2003 - Health America introduced HealthAssurance FlexChoice, its consumer-directed health plan. The company also expanded its service area into Cameron, Carbon, Clarion, Elk, Jefferson, McKean, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne, and Wyoming counties.
